about

April 29 is the anniversary of the Indonesian government's execution of two Australians—Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. They were both around 21 when they were arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs out of Indonesia. This is my song about Andrew whom I met in Krobokan Prison.

lyrics

KROBOKAN PRISON

1.
They took me from the airport to a prison in the town,
Nothing more than flesh for them to play with,
Like rabid dogs on carrion, they had to hold me down,
And chain me to my own humiliation.

2.
They tied me to a chair and said I had to confess
For crimes I had no guilt or implication,
I explained this boy and I had only recently met,
It was just an innocent association.

REFRAIN
So, who throws the dice?
Who gets to live—and who dies?

3.
They held me in a cell where we all slept on the floor,
Twelve women and a toilet in the corner,
For an hour a day the prison guards would put us on show,
Where we’d mingle with the inmates on Death Row…

4.
Andrew came to talk to me to help me survive,
No clemency, he’d soon be executed,
No requiem, no angels and no heaven beyond,
He wondered where his life had gone so wrong.

REFRAIN
So, who throws the dice?
Who gets to live—and who dies?

5.
My father paid the bribe and I was finally released,
Four weeks inside, no charges laid, my nightmare ends,
Meanwhile the souls awaiting Presidential Decree,
Are murdered in a secret place: the State’s revenge.

CODA
But where does it end?
Where does it end?
Where does it end?
