about

This is a song about a young woman's time in New York City. While NYC seems to be the pinnacle of human history and culture, the singer feels an unsettling sense of disjuncture. Her boyfriend doesn't notice the crimson rain or the fading blue sky. NB The keystone 'Blue' is sung in four part harmony (1-3-5-6)

lyrics

Blue

1.
Blue—
A crimson rain is falling in New York City,
The sky once blue is turning a darker hue,
I turn to you but your eyes are weary.
You’re saying something like you always try to please me,
The city swarms around us like we’re lost in a summer storm.

2.
I quit my job: now I’m done with dancing
For lonely men and their dream to have me,
Spread out like a psalm on Sunday,
A semi-quaver rippling through my thighs—In some ways—
I’d rather have their fantasy than love that has no soul.

CHORUS
And where do we go from here?
And what is the love that we fear?

3.
Ground Zero and the church is full at midday,
I pray to God but She has some other plans,
I sing a hymn and I ask forgiveness,
The Very Reverend Father says it’s none of my business,
He tells me to go home and to sleep it off alone.

CHORUS
And where do we go from here?
And what is the love that we fear?

4.
The crimson rain still falls in New York City,
In a world that’s made of lies we’re all trying to survive,
We know our love is doomed but I can’t help trying,
It doesn’t really matter if you leave me crying—
It’s not so much for you but for a sky that once shone blue.
