1.
1. Ellen was born in the County Antrim, Ireland, Cold winters, snow is falling down, The Red Coats came through and took their land away, Exiled in 1845. 2. Great Southern Land, eight children, desperation; Drought and fire and famine laid them low, Their mother sent to gaol, Ellen’s boys would find a way To avenge the family and the Kelly name. 3. Ellen hears the news directly from the warden— One son shot dead the other’s going to hang, She tells him on that day: ‘Ned die proudly, not afraid, ‘No good man ever suffered for your crimes!’ RFPTISE Now I’m standing on the iron stairs Where poor men took their final breath, The hangman’s just an actor Paid to fabricate a hero’s death. Meanwhile, I see a mother cry As we drink tea and preen our lives. We make the past and raise our glass To all the lies we think will last. 4. I was born in a world that can’t remember, Went to college, earned myself a name, In the museum of my genes I’ am Mitochondrial Eve, And a Mother who must watch their children die. And she will bring them life, And watch her children die. Bring them life And watch her children die.

The Universe in a Teardrop 1. The universe in a teardrop, The evening mists that follow me, The draping arms of a eucalypt, The heave and groaning of the sea. 2. The noise and fury of the world beyond, The captive cadence of a bluebird’s song, The troubled times and worried minds, We’ll leave them all behind. CHORUS So hush my love, Take my hand, Hold me close And dream this night away. 3. The universe in your fingertips, The stars are shining through your eyes, Eternity in the darkening sky, The timeless beauty of your life. 4. The world that whispers through your pain, The broken prism of your faith, The fears and tears of troubled times, We’ll leave them all behind. CHORUS So hush my love, Take my hand, Hold me close And dream this night away. So hush my love, Take my hand, Hold me close And dream this night away.

Waiting 04:08
1. Silence Creeps down my street, Cold winds That whisper your name to me. Moonbeams, A lock of your hair, Stranded in cadence With nobody there. 2. Pleasure, Ghosts in my room, Thinking of you Like a bird in a storm, Wild winds, The light that shines through, Destiny breaking This moment in you. CHORUS So I’m waiting for you Eye of the storm, I’m waiting Like a child to be born, I’m waiting for you Ocean and sea, I’ll wait until you come back To me. 3. Crowded Thoughts in my head, Turning around When I think that you’re there; Cling to The time that we lose, Everything passes Like flowers in bloom. CHORUS So I’m waiting for you Eye of the storm, I’m waiting Like a child to be born, I’m waiting for you, Ocean and sea, I’ll wait until you come back To me— To me, to me, to me.

After the End 1. Mists are drifting over Chula Vista plains, There’s warm breezes from the sea, Cathedral bells are ringing in a midnight mass, If I could write, I’d let you know I’m here. Oh, what’s the difference now? Desolation seeping through my veins. Oh, what’s the difference now? I can never turn to you again. 2. In this place I’m just a trace of your forgotten world, A eulogy for you to read, I’ll just be a picture of a creature you’ve named, And a god who has abandoned me. Oh, what’s the difference now? Cold water running through my veins, Oh, what’s the difference now? I can never turn to you again. BRIDGE Now it seems as though your love’s run out, Draining from the mountain to the sea. Nothing left but contemplations of yourself— What you going to do about me? 3. Now I’m haunted by your beauty and your cruelty, My destruction you refuse to feel, Just a metaphor of tears in an unmarked grave, From my beginning to eternity. Oh, what’s the difference now? You loved me then you turned away, Oh, what’s the difference now? We can never come back here again. Never come back here again, Never come back here again. Never come back here…

1. Southbank in Spring, Gourdon flowers in bloom, You bought me Kenyan coffee And a yellow balloon. Hold on now, This beauty overwhelming me, Hold on now, Will you take me in your loving arms? 2. Walk along the Champs-Elysées With Saint-Saens in my head, Remember Gustav Flaubert And the things that he said. Oh no! Emotion overwhelming me, Oh no! Please take me in your loving arms. 3 Sunset on the river, Busy people going by, I want to be your Gaughan nude For the rest of my life… Ah no, This world is overwhelming me, Hold on now, Please take me in your loving arms. BRIDGE All at once the moon is rising, Luminescent in my eyes, And I imagine escape into the hollow space Between the earth and sky. Now you weave my life in a purple night Embroidered by the stars, Then our senses rise and our souls embrace As you hold me in your arms. 4. Southbank in spring, Lilac flowers in bloom, This moment floats away from me Like a yellow balloon. Oh no! This love is overwhelming me, Ah no! Please hold me in your loving arms, Your loving arms, Your loving arms.

Here She Comes 1. Here she comes, Torchlight on her tongue, You wait for her to take you When she finds you on your own. So serene, (Not quite what you mean), You know she’s going to break you down,, And cut you down, And bring you to your knees. 2. You’re staring at the moon, She takes you to her room, You find her body soothing As she’s moving through her wounds. Turquoise on her feet, Bleeding on the sheets, You know she’s going to break you down, And cut you down, And bring you to your knees. BRIDGE Look out where you walk, Don’t turn around when you hear her talk, Find somewhere to hide, She’ll leave you howling in the morning light. 3. Mercy without peace, Heaven in the street, Angels at the corner store Won’t ask for more than you give. Your footfall’s out of time, In words that you can’t rhyme; You’re never going to keep her, But you’ll weep For her in your sleep. You know she’s going to break you down, And cut you down, And bring you to your knees.

Flowers 03:06
Flowers 1. She comes from the mountains in cold morning air, The song in her voice gently calling. The ice in the river, the swift in the sky, The leaves that are softly falling. Chorus Flowers bend in the wind And rise to the sun. 2. The soldier returning, his head hanging down, The soles of his feet are bleeding, He looks to the Heavens, he looks to the sky, Touches the earth that is weeping. Chorus 3. The scent of the roses, the bed of her love, A prayer to St Mary’s Salvation, The moon in the window, the frost on the ground, The blush on his cheeks slowly fading. Chorus Chorus Flowers, Sunshine Flowers, sun.

1. Daylight, Changing weather, The card that you sent to me, Makes no sense at all. Crystals, Broken coffee cups, Your drugs on the window sill, The cracks in the wall. Chorus These are the fragments of my life, Pray You’ll never lose this time. 2. Mother, Perfect innocence, The body you broke for me, The pain I returned. Father, With your cloak of steel, The freedom they took from you, You never revealed. Chorus These are the fragments of my life, Pray you’ll never lose this time. 3. Jerusalem, Where you took my hand, The pathway to Paradise, A room of our own. Travelling, And our roads diverge, The card that you sent to me, I’ll never return. Chorus These are the fragments of my life, Pray you’ll never lose this time.

1. I saw you climbing The Tower of Babel, But you’re unable To reach the top. Your pride delights you, God’s fury strikes you, But you believe that you’re the Chosen One. CHORUS What you gonna do when The kings and the queens desert you? What you gonna do when The pieces fall apart? Who you gonna love when Her arms no longer hold you? Standing on the street In your sheets With a broken heart. 2. Falling, forever falling, I hear you call As you tumble down. People you preyed on, The drugs you stayed on— No-one to save you when you hit the ground. CHORUS What you gonna do when The kings and the queens desert you? What you gonna do when The pieces fall apart? Who you gonna love when Her arms no longer hold you? Standing on the street In your sheets With a broken heart. BRIDGE Hallelujah! Time’s not made of stone… She’ll see right through ya Throw off your Hollow Crown. Hallelujah! You’re in this Passion Play, It’s quite peculiar, You don’t know what to say. 3. Shaking, Your body’s breaking, Your soul is fading like a winter sun. You say you’re crying, I know you’re lying, The Tower of Babel falls in Babylon. CHORUS What you gonna do when The kings and the queens desert you? What you gonna do when The pieces fall apart? Who you gonna love when Her arms no longer hold you? Standing on the street In your sheets With a broken heart. CODA Hallelujah! Time’s not made of stone… She’ll see right through ya Thrw off your Hollow Crown. Hallelujah! 1. There’s thunder rolling through the streets, The sound of their artillery, There’s fighting on the border. More hate and blood and slaughter, They’ll soon be coming after me. 2. Brutal power and violent men, Scattering the fields with carrion, They burned our houses And took away our gods, Leaving nothing but our dream of revenge! Chorus Feel like Revelation is coming, Feel like Revelation is coming, Feels like Revelation is coming, Feels like Revelation is coming. 3. In our Homeland we become exiles, Exhausted by the fear and fight, We live in the forest With God’s beauty all around us, Scavenging our food to survive. 4. So we hide in the lost trails of light, Where we evade and raid our enemies at night, And your guns alone won’t save us From the powers that enslave us, To deny the sanctity of our lives! Chorus Feel like Revelation is coming, Feel like Revelation is coming, Feels like Revelations is coming, Feels like Revelations is coming. Coda Sacred Places, Sacred Places, Sacred Places, Sacred Places.

about

Our lives are replete with endings—life stages, the things we possess, even relationships and love. Somehow, though, every ending is inscribed by the prospect of a new beginning, a new possibility, a new joy. The poet T.S. Eliot imagines this cycle of change in the fall of a shadow —
Between the idea
And the reality,
Between the motion
And the act,
Falls the Shadow.

And yet, for every shadow there must be illumination. The songs in this album explore the light and dark as a journey toward some finer tone—a transcendence that releases us from the cloying closure of the shadow.

Not that I’m satisfied with clichés or a sanctimonious pathway to joy. Rather, I want my music to engage in a creative struggle that carries the listener beyond the limits imposed by any ending. As I’ve imagined this creative challenge, each song is like a pillar in the Parthenon. It bears the force of an individual weight while contributing to the aesthetic integrity of the whole album. My hope is that ‘After the End’ is a richly woven communion of ideas, emotions, sensibilities, poems and musical enjoyment. Thank you for listening.
