Here She Comes

from After the End by Joustene Lorenz

about

There are two characters in this song: the woman (she) and the person (‘you’) who is entranced by her. I use 4/4 timing and a marching beat to give a sense of force and inevitability as the woman enters the life and imagination of the admirer.

In many respects, the song plays with the motif of the femme fatale—a dangerous and sexually potent women who imposes herself over a vulnerable admirer. Certainly, the you character in the song is bewitched by the woman he imagines to be sexually powerful.

Unlike other 'femme fatale' songs and films, 'Here She Comes' inverts the conventions of the genre. , This is achieved by exposing the woman’s own complexity and vulnerability: in lovemaking she moves through her ‘wounds’ and bleeds on the sheets. She wears turquoise on her feet, a self-adornment that is normally hidden from view. So the fears and warnings that the song vocalizes are all of the you character’s imagining.

In the final verses of the song the you character concedes their own fallibility—'your footfall's out of time/In words that you can't rhyme'. There may be mercy: but there is no peace.

lyrics

Here She Comes

1.
Here she comes,
Torchlight on her tongue,
You wait for her to take you
When she finds you on your own.

So serene,
(Not quite what you mean),
You know she’s going to break you down,,
And cut you down,
And bring you to your knees.

2.
You’re staring at the moon,
She takes you to her room,
You find her body soothing
As she’s moving through her wounds.

Turquoise on her feet,
Bleeding on the sheets,
You know she’s going to break you down,
And cut you down,
And bring you to your knees.

BRIDGE
Look out where you walk,
Don’t turn around when you hear her talk,
Find somewhere to hide,
She’ll leave you howling in the morning light.

3.
Mercy without peace,
Heaven in the street,
Angels at the corner store
Won’t ask for more than you give.

Your footfall’s out of time,
In words that you can’t rhyme;
You’re never going to keep her,
But you’ll weep
For her in your sleep.

You know she’s going to break you down,
And cut you down,
And bring you to your knees.
