Flowers

from After the End by Joustene Lorenz

about

‘Flowers’ is inspired by the sounds of profane Medieval music. I love its enchanting simplicity and soothing, emotional compression. Medieval life could be incredibly harsh, but its music would somehow elevate the spirit in a community of players and listeners. My own song originates in this same stark and beautiful convolution. I have a mountain woman who greets the returning soldier. She wends with him through the tragedy of his passing. But instead of collapsing in despair, she personifies the flower that bends in the wind and rises to the sun.

lyrics

Flowers

1.
She comes from the mountains in cold morning air,
The song in her voice gently calling.
The ice in the river, the swift in the sky,
The leaves that are softly falling.

Chorus
Flowers bend in the wind
And rise to the sun.

2.
The soldier returning, his head hanging down,
The soles of his feet are bleeding,
He looks to the Heavens, he looks to the sky,
Touches the earth that is weeping.

Chorus

3.
The scent of the roses, the bed of her love,
A prayer to St Mary’s Salvation,
The moon in the window, the frost on the ground,
The blush on his cheeks slowly fading.

Chorus

Chorus

Flowers, Sunshine
Flowers, sun.
